Innovative Technology

We are never satisfied with current performance. On an ongoing basis, we seek out new capabilities to improve the environmental performance of all of our activities.

Landfills: Highly Engineered

Our environmental standards begin with the design and construction of the site. It is sealed like a vault with various liners, clay and/or synthetic, to protect the surrounding land, water and air. Collection systems are installed at the base of the landfill to collect and remove any water that reaches the liner system. As the landfill develops, gas recovery systems are installed to control the methane that is naturally produced as organic waste decomposes.

Landfill Gas-to-Energy

We have invested in waste-to-energy technologies which converts methane gas produced in a landfill to electricity. Conversion of methane reduces greenhouse emissions while making a positive contribution to energy production.

Our Seneca Meadows Landfill has created a 200-acre "Renewable Resource Park" that builds on the resources created by the landfill's 17 megawatt landfill gas-to-energy facility. In addition to Seneca Meadows, we have a landfill gas-to-energy facility at our Lachenaie Landfill in Lachenaie, Quebec. Together the two operations produce more electrical power annually than the energy contained in 85,000 barrels of oil. Our plan is to build more gas-to-energy facilities as our landfills continue to develop.

Our landfill sites provide an environmentally safe and economical way to manage the non-hazardous, solid waste generated within the community. We strive to find new and innovative methods to use at our facilities to further benefit the community.
